Rochester: Welcome to Oakland Transit!
New fixed-route service to Rochester and enhanced fixed-route service in Auburn Hills, Troy, Clawson, and Royal Oak will begin on Monday, April 22nd.
At the March 28, 2024 Board of Directors meeting , the next quarterly SMART service change was formally announced which includes the launch of Route 492, Rochester Road.

New Routes and Route Changes
NEW! Route 492: Rochester Road
The long-awaited Route 492 , Rochester Road, will connect Rochester and Rochester Hills to Metro Detroit’s public transit network for the first time in 30 years. Buses will travel from Oakland University to Downtown Rochester, Oakland Mall, Downtown Royal Oak, and the new Jason Hargrove Transit Center in Detroit.
New destinations served include Sylvan Glen Park, Nino Salvaggio, Hampton Village Centre, Winchester Plaza, Ascension Providence Rochester Hospital, and Meadow Brook Hall at Oakland University.
Route Description
Note: Route 492 will serve the new Jason Hargrove Transit Center in Detroit following its completion.
Southbound: Depart Oakland University traffic circle shelter, take second exit onto University Drive, right Squirrel, right Walton, continue onto University, right Main, continue onto Rochester, right onto westbound Big Beaver, left first turnback onto eastbound Big Beaver, right John R, right Elliott, second left onto Oakland Mall access road, stop at shelter outside JCPenney, continue through parking lot along access road back to Elliott, left Elliott, right Chicago, left Maple, left Rochester, left Main, left Eleven Mile, left Lafayette, left Sherman to serve the Royal Oak Transit Center eastside stop, left Washington, right Eleven Mile, right Campbell, continue across I-696 onto Hilton, right Eight Mile Service Road, left M-1 Service Road, continue onto southbound Woodward, left first turnback onto northbound Woodward, right onto State Fair temporary access drive, drop off at north side of temporary State Fair platform, end route in parking lot staging area.
Northbound: Pick up at south side of temporary State Fair platform, continue on temporary access drive to Woodward, right Woodward, slight right onto M-1 Service Road, right Lindsay Lane, left Hilton, continue across I-696 onto Campbell, left Eleven Mile, left Lafayette, left Sherman to serve the Royal Oak Transit Center eastside stop, left Washington, right Eleven Mile, left Main, slight right onto Rochester, right Maple, right Chicago, left Elliott, second right onto Oakland Mall access road, stop at shelter outside JCPenney, continue through parking lot along access road back to Elliott, right Elliott, left John R, right onto eastbound Big Beaver, left first turnback onto westbound Big Beaver, right Rochester, continue onto Main, left University, continue onto Walton, left onto southbound Squirrel, left first turnback past University onto northbound Squirrel, right University, end route at Oakland University traffic circle shelter.
Route Schedule
Monday through Saturday, service along the full route will operate from 6:00am to 10:00pm. Buses depart the Jason Hargrove Transit Center (State Fair) Bay 9 traveling toward Oakland University at 5:58am, 7:00am, 8:00am, and continue to depart approximately every 60 minutes until 9:00pm, 10:00pm, and 11:00pm. Buses depart Oakland University traveling toward the Jason Hargrove Transit Center (State Fair) Bay 9 at 6:00am, 7:00am, 8:00am, and continue to depart every 60 minutes until 9:00pm, 10:00pm, and 11:00pm.
Travel time from Oakland University to Downtown Rochester is approximately 15 minutes. Downtown Rochester to Oakland Mall is another 30 minutes. Oakland Mall to Royal Oak is another 15 minutes. Royal Oak to State Fair is another 15 minutes.
Travel time from Oakland University to Downtown Royal Oak is approximately 60 minutes. Travel time along the entire route from Oakland University to the Jason Hargrove Transit Center is approximately 90 minutes.
Additional short runs at 5:00am and 11:00pm will originate from and terminate at Oakland Mall, respectively. See full timetables below.
Note: Stops within Downtown Rochester (University at Walnut, Main at Second) are not timepoints along Route 492. Use scheduled times at Walton and Livernois (Southbound) and Rochester and Avon (Northbound) to plan your trip; be ready and waiting downtown at these times, as buses may depart anywhere within the ten-minute window between these two timepoints. Use the Transit App or a third-party tracking app of choice to see the location of your bus.

Route 790: Pontiac Crosstown
New destinations served include Meijer and Walmart in Marketplace Circle on Adams Road, south of Hamlin Road, and the Clinton River Trail Leach Road Trailhead.
Destinations no longer served by Route 790 include the Stellantis (Chrysler Tech Center) interior ring road, Auburn between Squirrel and Opdyke, and Opdyke between Auburn and Featherstone. Use Flex or Route 796 to reach these destinations.
Attention! Current users of Route 790, check the schedules before riding as stop times have shifted slightly.
Route 400: Southfield / Orchard Ridge
This route will be discontinued. Use the following alternative routes to reach destinations previously served by Route 400.
- Northland Center: Routes 405, 415, and 420, Route 851 during peak hours, and multiple DDOT routes
- Nine Mile Road: Route 710
- Evergreen Road: Routes 405 and 730, and DDOT Route 60
- Civic Center Drive: Route 730
- Franklin Road: Route 275
- OCC Orchard Ridge: Route 740 and, during peak hours, Route 851
- Orchard Lake Road: Route 405 and, during peak hours, Route 851
- Maple Road: Route 405
The entirety of Farmington and Farmington Hills remains served by SMART’s on-demand microtransit service, Flex.
Route 430: Main Street-Big Beaver
Stops south of the Royal Oak Transit Center along Eleven Mile, Campbell, Hilton, and to the Jason Hargrove Transit Center will now be served by Route 492 only as described above. Route 430 will now start and end at the Royal Oak Transit Center. Additional Route 430 trips will deviate to Royal Oak High School during peak hours.
The remainder of Route 430 is unaffected, though schedules may differ.
Route 851: West Bloomfield-Farmington Park and Ride
The route will no longer serve the Northland Center Park and Ride lot.
Routes 280 and 805: Middlebelt/Beech Daily, Grand River Park and Ride
The Western Graham Fields Park and Ride lot is permanently closing. Claude Allison Park will now serve as a Park and Ride location along both routes.
Other Route Changes
The following routes will see minor time changes. On Route 210, the last eastbound trip on Saturdays will terminate at Schaefer rather than Fairlane Town Center.
